Masonic News from Garner, NC
August, 2001
Brethren,
Tidings from the East.
I certainly hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July holiday.
Before you know it, the summer will be gone and we will be celebrating Labor
Day. Our first stated communication in July was held on the 9th and
we were treated to an “All-American” meal of hot dogs, and hamburgers with all
the trimmings. Brother Jim Talaska and the Chef’s Crew did another fine job of
feeding the Lodge and our guests.
We really do have a
lot going on in the Lodge right now, and it is an exciting time to be a member
of Garner 701. If you have not attended lately please make every effort to come
join us, I think you will find it enjoyable and most rewarding.
Recently, a generous
donor provided a quantity of paint to the Lodge. Brother Barry Tucker has
lavishly given of his time and painted most of the downstairs dining room and
kitchen. Brother Greg Ray repaired the dining room lights for us as well. There
is still a considerable amount of work to do downstairs, but with the efforts
of these two brothers and others we are making progress.
I was very sad to
learn that Worshipful Brother Harry Pitts suffered a stroke on June 29th.
Worship Brother Harry has been a Master Mason for more than 50 years, and is
one of our most faithful attendees. I understand that he is presently being
treated at Wake Rehab. I am sure Worshipful Brother Harry would appreciate a
card, call, or visit. Brother Harry, please know that you are in our thoughts
and prayers. We all are looking forward to seeing you back in the Lodge with
us. You are a great asset to Garner 701 and we miss you very much.
I was delighted to see
Worshipful Brother Milton Carroll and Brother Frank Golden at our meeting on the
9th. Both of these brothers have been somewhat “under the weather”
recently, and it was great to have them back with us.
At our last meeting,
an anonymous brother donated a brand new Cannon Copy Machine to the Lodge. It
is hoped that the cost of our newsletter may be reduced as we now have the
capability to make our own copies. We will also be able to make copies of the
Lodge’s newly revised Bylaws and provide them to any member who requests a
copy. Although the brother insists on remaining anonymous, the Lodge certainly
appreciates his thoughtful gift.
Brethren, if you were
not at our last stated communication, I am very sorry to say you missed one of
the most inspirational, touching, and moving Masonic Education Programs that I
have ever had the privilege of hearing. Our own Brother Wendell Haire, who was
seriously and permanently, injured during the D-Day Invasion shared with us a
part of his D-Day experience. I truly believe that not a brother left the Lodge
that night without being impacted by Brother Wendell’s story. We all surely
appreciate Brother Wendell telling his story, and the wonderful manner in which
he did it.
Attention “Web
Surfers!” Go to www.garnerlodge701.org and see our beautifully designed
Web Page. Thanks to Brother Ken Hartman for getting us “online” and doing so in
such style.
Finally Brethren don’t
forget our auction and raffle to be held on 14 September 2001 at the Shrine
Club on Lead Mine Road in Raleigh. Let’s make a real effort to sell those
tickets and tables.
Please make a point to
attend our next communication; it’s just not the same without you.
Fraternally,
Jimmy Stevens, Master
